The idea I have chosen for my folio is fly-fishing. Fly-fishing covers a range of things from entomolygy through to bamboo fly-rod construction. There is also a vast range of literature associated with the sport that goes back as far as 1420 - The Treatise of Fishing with an Angle.
As this
is such a large area to cover I have decided to focus on fishing flies and also
fly tying.
I plan on taking photos of various flies to convey the
intricacy of their construction as well as their beauty. Not all of the flies I will use may be
the best ones to fish with, but they will represent the art of fly-tying.
I will also be attending a fly-tying evening at my club and take
some shots of people in the act of tying them.
I have built a macro studio that I will use for taking the
photos of the flies. The plan is to take a number of photos of the flies and
then to have a central photograph to put them in some form of context. This may be the
equipment used in fly-fishing or an actual fish with the fly still in its
mouth.
The video below is an example of fly-tying.
Some fly-tiers go to extremes with their realistic
impression of insects – here are some examples.
